We have our own fair share of excellent performing arts in Devon, with both local and travelling artists bringing many different varieties of performance to a diverse range of venues.
Theatres – there are a number of theatres in Devon showing plays, hosting music events and opera. Both the Theatre Royal in Plymouth and the Northcott Theatre in Exeter have a wide range of shows on throughout the year. Smaller theatres such as The Bike Shed in Exeter, the Drum in Dartington, and Toads Little Theatre in Torquay offer an exciting array of shows, sometimes alternative and quirky. Another theatre in Exeter, The Corn Exchange, regularly shows theatre, comedy and music.
Live Music – Devon has a thriving live music scene with a number of venues, clubs and bars hosting music events. A wide variety of music festivals also take place throughout the year, including folk, jazz, classical and blues festivals, and we also have a growing number of multi-stage festivals, such as Chagstock, the Beautiful Days Festival and Glas-Denbury (not to be confused with Glastonbury!).
Dance – With the Exeter Dance festival celebrating the very best dancing in the South West, from ballet and hip hop to Greek and tap, there is something to appeal to just about anyone. At many other venues throughout the year, there are opportunities to witness many different styles of dance, including Appalachian dancing, ice dancing, ballroom and, if you’re really lucky, Morris dancing!
